Italy supports the immediate opening of negotiations for Albania and Northern Macedonia.

The statement came from Prime Minister Mario Draghi during his speech before the European Parliament.

"The full integration of countries that manifest aspirations does not pose a threat to the stability of the European project. "Italy supports the immediate opening of membership negotiations with Albania and Northern Macedonia in accordance with the decision taken by the European Council in March 2020," said Draghi.

Draghi's position came during the long discussion on the future of Europe, where he also mentioned other Balkan countries that have been waiting for years for membership in the European Union.

"We want to give a new impetus to the negotiations with Serbia and Montenegro and ensure maximum attention to the legitimate expectations of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo. "We are in favor of the entry of all these countries and we want Ukraine in the EU."

Focusing on Russia's latest aggression, Mario Draghi said that defending Ukraine means defending Europe itself and helping it means working for peace, and for that Italy is ready to be on the front line for finding a diplomatic solution.
