The Greek historian and philosopher, Constantinos Filis, has made a comment in the "Kathimerini" newspaper on the issue of the punishment of the elected mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri.

In his long article with the title "Beler's conviction, a wake-up call" he says that this event should serve as a reason for changing Greece's foreign policy in relations with Albania, but also more widely towards the Western Balkans.

The author recalls that in a few days it will be one year since the exhibition of mixed works and sculptures of the Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, in Athens. At that time, according to him, there was optimism that Albania would accept Greece's proposal to send to The Hague the issue of the border of the maritime zones between the two countries, overcoming the obstacles raised after the annulment of the 2008 agreement by the Constitutional Court of Albania. He says that at that time there was a cautious approach of Athens towards Kosovo, but in general there was a support of Greece for the integration of the countries of the Western Balkans.

"Albania has been influenced for several years by specific countries, it obviously belongs to the sphere of influence of the United States, but also European countries, such as Germany and Italy, but also Turkey have a strong influence in Tirana. Apparently it is Berlin and Rome who are giving Rama the confidence that if necessary he will override any Greek veto, or rather, to put it more bluntly, that Greece will be pressured not to block the negotiations. Albania's membership in the EU", writes Filis.

In this line, the Greek analyst says that in order to highlight and strengthen the role of Tirana in the region, "the Albanian prime minister regularly holds regional conferences (with the participation of European leaders), promotes interconnection projects mainly in infrastructure and transport between the states of the region, is one of the initiators of the creation of the free trade area of the Western Balkan states and of course it is advertised as the main representative of the Albanian populations of the Balkans, which of course irritates the leadership of the Kosovo Albanians.

In recent weeks, Albania has signed a military cooperation agreement with Turkey, inaugurated the first NATO air base in the Western Balkans (a similar naval base is also being discussed), received the Turkish Bayraktar TB2 drone, while at the end of March after the green light of the Constitutional Court, the Assembly ratified the agreement with Italy for the establishment of reception centers for immigrants within the Albanian territory. All this is added to Tirana's efforts to take a leading role in regional affairs and to become a point of reference, so that later Greece will not find it easy to put obstacles in its European perspective", he writes. he.

The Greek analyst says that in this line also with the "Beleri" case, Rama has taught the idea that he "belongs to the justice system" that has the support of Americans and Europeans and that is taking more power than the legislature and the executive.

"Albania is steadily and effectively creating protective shields through partnerships and collaborations with powerful actors within the West, even selling anti-Russian theses and becoming more sympathetic to certain leaderships and circles.

Ultimately, the Beleri case is a wake-up call for Greek diplomacy in relation to the Western Balkans and the dynamic and new balances that prevail. We must have a plan and a vision to recover comprehensively and universally in the region, because our competitors are already strategically placed on the chessboard and not only from the East", concludes the article in Kathimerini.
