For Sali Berisha, the maritime border issue with Greece can be resolved very easily, in the spirit of good cooperation between the two countries, once the Democratic Party comes to power.
This is what the leader of the Albanian opposition hinted to the Greek media outlet "To Manifesto" after his meeting with compatriots in Athens.
"Of course, this issue will be resolved through dialogue in good spirit, just as we did (in 2009) with the will to solve the problem. This is what we aim for," Berisha said, while in his speech to supporters he declared that if the DP wins the elections, "the agreement will be concluded and Albania-Greece relations will be very excellent."
Following the interview, the leading democrat defended the agreement that his government and that of Costas Karamanlis signed in 2009 to define the maritime border, but which was overturned by the Constitutional Court.
"Regarding the delimitation of the maritime zones signed by the Karamanlis-Berisha governments in 2009, the Albanian politician blamed Mr. Rama, who "because of third parties and for his own interests, exerted pressure and overturned the agreement," which he called "the best agreement." "It was a win-win agreement. Of course, there was no reason for either Greece or Albania to lose," writes Greek media.
Berisha further confessed that his political rival, Edi Rama, after the rejection of the agreement by the Constitutional Court of Albania, agreed with the two successive Greek governments to send the "Sea" issue for review to The Hague.
"Rama told the Tsipras government 'we have a better deal' and started new, very stupid talks. Because after two or more years, after several rounds of negotiations, when they were ready to sign it, he apologized and said that 'the court's decision does not allow us to do it'. Of course, Kotzias was very angry, and I also denounced him. You cannot behave like this. You know the court's decision. You have to be serious," Berisha added.
