"Some hope that I am unhappy with the SP", Arben Malaj tells the story
Agron Shehaj and Arben Malaj

Former Minister of Finance, Arben Malaj, also one of the well-known figures of the Socialist Party, in an opinion piece for the Panorama newspaper, recounted the offer made to him by Agron Shehaj's "Mundësia" Party to be part of it.

Malaj, who has been part of Parliament as an MP for 16 years and who has held key positions in the socialist government as Minister of Finance and Economy, has been offered the position of "vice president" of a branch of Shehaj's party.

" A few days ago my phone rang, it was an unknown number. I continue to feel a grateful obligation to people and I answered it without delay. The lady on the other end asked if she was speaking to me.

I immediately identified myself. The lady was calling from Mr. Shehaj's party and asked me to be the vice-chairman in the reorganization of unit no. 5 in Tirana. I must explain to the lady that I had served for 16 years as a deputy of the Socialist Party in the Vlora district in the years 1997-2013 and that in the years 1997-2005 I had served as Minister of Finance and Minister of Economy. During these years, I had the opportunity to, with deep integrity, great love and outstanding professionalism, manage to get the country out of the trap of pyramid schemes.

Often, after 2013 when I am no longer active in the SP and politics, some parties of the left or even right spectrum invite me to join them. Maybe some of them hope that I will be dissatisfied with the SP and jump from one party to another for some deputy or ministerial post. They are very wrong, because for the simple and uncorrupted socialists, who have not benefited anything personally during the mandates of the SP government, I have unconditional and permanent gratitude , "writes Malaj.

Further, Arben Malaj writes that: "I do not prefer jumping from one party to another for parliamentary or ministerial positions. Churchill declared that: "for principles I change parties, for parties I do not change principles". There are few coincidences like Churchill's when the transition from one party to another is made to create new parliamentary majorities. The politician who makes this "rainbow" transition does so because with this leap, he becomes the leader of his party and his country".

Full analysis of ARBEN MALAJT

First, I want to clarify that I consider healthy pluralism to be one of the essential prerequisites for democratic developments and standards.

In this regard, I appreciate Mr. Shehaj's commitment to the restructuring of the Albanian right, which is in the midst of an identity crisis and the weakest political representation since 1991. A few days ago, my phone rang, it was an unknown number. I continue to feel a grateful obligation to people and I answered without delay. The lady on the other end asked if she was talking to me.

Perhaps some of them hope that I will be dissatisfied with the SP and jump from one party to another for some deputy or ministerial post. They are very wrong, because for the simple and uncorrupted socialists, who have not personally benefited from anything during the mandates of the SP government, I have unconditional and permanent gratitude. What are the eight main reasons why I did not accept the invitation of Mr. Shehaj's party:

1. Integrity is the cornerstone of trust. Without it, every political edifice is destined to collapse. I will never, for any seat, disappoint all those who have trusted me, supported me, and sacrificed for the SP.

2. I do not prefer jumping from one party to another for parliamentary or ministerial positions. Churchill declared that: “for principles I change parties, for parties I do not change principles”. There are few coincidences like Churchill's when the transition from one party to another is made to create new parliamentary majorities. The politician who makes this “rainbow” transition does so because with this leap, he becomes the leader of his party and his country.

3. Self-respect. Eleanor Roosevelt, an icon of American politics, advised that: “No one can feel dishonored without his consent.” So I found it difficult to accept the disrespect and accept a spontaneous invitation, which did not even recognize and therefore did not respect my contributions to the public, scientific and political life of my country from 1991 to the present.

4. My commitment since the beginning of pluralism in the progressive left in 1991 was not a spontaneous decision and even less a careerist one. When I joined the Socialist Party in 1991, the political environment was very tense. I was lucky to have the opportunity to contribute to the reduction of political tensions and a dignified representation of the socialists in Vlora, in that very tense and even hostile period among the Albanians. In that difficult period, the chairman of the SP in Vlora was Gëzim Tushe, a personality and intellectual with a clear vision for the responsibilities of the ALP and for the difficult challenges of the Socialist Party. Gëzim was/is a personality who enjoyed respect from the entire political spectrum in Vlora.

I joined the left because even today I believe that difficult problems such as the deepening of poverty and inequality to extreme levels to the point where the 8 largest billionaires have the wealth of 3.5 billion people, or half of the world's population, cannot be solved by Smith's invisible/hidden hands. In the face of the market economy that absolutizes the effects of invisible hands, I prefer and support the model of the social market economy, where social cohesion and solidarity soothe the social wounds of free market failures.

5. Mr. Shehaj has recently launched a campaign like all the others with increasing aggression and not with a convincing governing platform for reforms in politics and the economy. He needs to make a fundamental change, by competing with a convincing alternative program and with a moderate language of public communication.

6. Mr. Shehaj can benefit from platform competition, from democracy within his party. The killing of internal party democracy in Albania occurred after the 2008 constitutional changes. Today, political parties in our country are joint liability companies (SHPK) with a single owner/shareholder, who is the party chairman.

7. No less important is the deformation of Mr. Shehaj's public profile, who instead of making a positive difference in Albanian politics, is clashing on the podium of the Albanian Parliament and on broadcasts in visual media with a worrying aggressiveness.

8. As an economist, I consider the growth of competitive platforms healthy for democracy, especially in our monopolized and corrupt political environment.
