Missed the Christmas meeting / Russian Ambassador responds to Rama: I did not
Prime Minister Edi Rama / New Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Albania, Aleksei Zaitsev

The new Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Albania, Aleksei Zaitsev, has indicated that he did not receive any invitation from Prime Minister Edi Rama for the dinner with the diplomatic corps on Tuesday evening in Kavajë.

Zaitsev claims that despite Edi Rama's statement, Russia has not refused to allow him to be present at the dinner because Moscow had refused to participate, while he expresses his openness to dialogue with the Albanian government on any open or complex issue between Albania and Russia.

"One might get the impression that the Russian side refused to participate in this reception. In fact, the Albanian authorities did not invite the Russian ambassador to Albania to the end-of-year protocol event. Refusal of dialogue and cooperation is not our choice," declares the head of Russian diplomacy in Tirana.

Zaitsev says that Moscow is open to discussing any issues, even the most complex ones, with Tirana, which it considers a partner, and that it has never had the intention to cool relations.

"The Russian side is ready to openly discuss with Albanian partners on any issue, even the most complex, in order to develop mutually beneficial cooperation in the interests of our countries and peoples. I emphasize that Russia has never been the initiator of the cooling of interaction with Tirana. Moreover, in the history of Russian-Albanian relations, there is no real basis for the existing contradictions," Zaitsev told MCN.

On Tuesday evening, Prime Minister Edi Rama held a dinner with the foreign diplomatic corps in Albania, emphasizing that the Russian ambassador's chair was empty, as the latter had not preferred to participate.

"I wish the Russian Federation's chair were not empty tonight, but the absence of its representative was not our choice. It was the difficult choice of his country, to step out of the ranks of peace-loving people with an unprovoked and unjust military aggression against Ukraine. This tragic act on the doorstep of democratic Europe has caused untold suffering, countless lives lost and widespread destruction. Ukraine and its brave people deserve our admiration, our solidarity and our unwavering support. May the new year bring peace, a just peace, to Ukraine and its people," Rama said yesterday.
