Up to 36,000 illegal immigrants can be accommodated in Albania, according to an agreement signed by Prime Minister Edi Rama and his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni.

The first camp for illegal immigrants from the countries of the Middle East, Asia and Africa will be set up in Shengjin. Italy will commit to their transport and accommodation, while Albania will take over their storage.

According to the agreement, the immigrants will stay in Albania until their asylum request is processed in Italy.

Meloni said that this is one of several camps that will be set up in Albania, and that the flow could reach up to 36 thousand immigrants per month, not including women and children.

"We talk through flows, and this flow can reach up to 36,000 people per month. This agreement does not include minors and pregnant women", declared Meloni during the conference with Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Meloni further explained that one of the centers will be set up in Shengjin.

"The jurisdiction of these centers will be Italian. In the port of Shengjin, where they will land, a reception and screening center will be built, then there will be another structure. The Albanian part will deal with the control readiness. We aim to be operational next spring", said Meloni.

For his part, Rama said that Albania owes Italy, and that he would not have accepted this agreement with any country other than Italy.
