The US Department of Government Efficiency, headed by billionaire Elon Musk, has held a hearing on what they describe as the misuse of USAID money around the world to influence American interests.

During the session that lasted more than two hours, Albania was also mentioned.

“The Open Society Foundations and USAID have also collaborated in supporting the East West Management Institute, which received $31.2 million from USAID in its last full fiscal year ending September 30. The institute initiated judicial changes in Albania that critics allege resulted in the persecution of Albanian opposition leader Sali Berisha, silencing an opponent of the country’s socialist prime minister,” journalist Tyler O’Neil of The Daily Signal said during the testimony.

Delina Fico, the director of the Civil Society Program at the East-West Institute, was accused days ago by Sali Berisha of embezzling USAID funds to influence justice system reform and attack the opposition.

Following this reporting, a DOGE representative on this committee asks the question: "Why is USAID involved in funding judicial changes in Albania, which resulted in the imprisonment of the opposition leader in Albania?"

 

Donald Trump's new administration has blocked USAID funds and is conducting a review of all programs, where reports so far have found numerous misuses of American taxpayer money.
