The European Democratic Party, part of 'Renew Europe', the alliance of liberal-democrats in the European Parliament, urged Prime Minister Edi Rama not to ignore the protesters' demands and not to reduce "their European aspirations to shady deals."
In a press release, the European Democratic Party, part of 'Renew Europe', the alliance of liberal-democrats in the European Parliament, on Tuesday called on Albania's Prime Minister, Edi Rama, to listen to the voices of protesters for democratic change and accountability.
"Albania's European future must not be hijacked by oligarchic interests," reads the opening statement of the European Democratic Party, part of 'Renew Europe', published on Monday evening, when the 23rd consecutive protest against the government led by Edi Rama was being held in Tirana.
The protest, which began as an opposition to government plans to build a residential complex in the Vjosa-Narta protected area, linked to the US president's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, quickly turned into an anti-establishment movement with the main demand being the resignation of the prime minister.
The European Democratic Party says it is following with concern the civic mobilization in Albania and the questions it raises about transparency, the rule of law, and the country's European future.
"What started as a protest against a contested real estate project in a protected natural area has turned into a broader demand for accountability and democratic change. The 'Flamingo Revolution' shows that many Albanians do not accept that their European aspirations are reduced to shady deals, private privileges and oligarchic interests," the European Democrats' position states.
Sandro Gozi, Secretary General of the European Democratic Party and Member of the European Parliament, says that “this message must be heard in Tirana and in Brussels” and that “after thirteen years in power, Prime Minister Edi Rama cannot ignore legitimate demands for accountability and for a real change of course, if this is what Albanians choose through democratic means.”
“Albania belongs in the European Union,” adds Gozi, “but membership cannot be built on weakened protections, agreements behind closed doors, or the seizure of public goods by a powerful handful. Development must serve citizens, protect natural heritage, and respect the rule of law.”
"Albania is not for sale, its European future should belong to its citizens — not the oligarchs," concludes Gozi.
In this context, PDE announces that Gozi submitted a priority written question to the European Commission on Monday, asking how it assesses these developments against Albania's obligations in the accession process regarding the rule of law, transparency and environmental protection, and what steps it will take to guarantee transparent decision-making and respect for the right to peaceful protest.
