The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, has reacted harshly to the flooding situation in the country, accusing the government of refusing to declare a state of natural disaster, with the aim of avoiding compensation for damages to citizens.
According to Berisha, floods from heavy rainfall have taken dramatic proportions across the country, while the government, according to him, is remaining indifferent to a situation that threatens the lives and property of thousands of citizens.
"In conditions when thousands and thousands of homes and tens of thousands of citizens have their homes and businesses flooded, the government does not declare a state of natural disaster, which would force the mobilization of all resources for the rescue and assistance of residents," said Berisha.
Berisha focused particularly on the situation in Durrës, emphasizing that in addition to heavy rainfall, the floods have been favored by the catastrophic state of the sewers and waterworks, specifically those of Porto Romano and Hamallaj, where according to him, some of the gates do not function, while the pumps are burned.
"Blocked or not cleaned, the dams are not functioning and this has favored the unprecedented flooding of homes and businesses."
The leader of the DP described the situation in the Novosela area as extremely threatening, supporting the request for the evacuation of residents and warning about the high risk of the Vjosa River.
"I urge residents to evacuate as soon as possible, because the Vjosa is one of the most dangerous rivers in terms of sudden floods."
He also mentioned floods caused by the overflowing of other rivers, such as the Drojë River, highlighting the lack of government presence in the affected areas.
In conclusion, Berisha stated that the failure to declare a state of natural disaster is intentional, as according to him it would force the government to compensate citizens for damages.
"This situation meets all the criteria to be declared a natural disaster, but the government is not doing so because it will not compensate citizens for their losses."
