In an official message released by the U.S. Embassy in Tirana, the essential importance of freedom of expression in a functioning democracy is emphasized.
The Embassy underlines that societies are strengthened through free thought, while censorship and government control over free speech pose serious threats to fundamental human rights.
The U.S. Embassy in Tirana has responded by raising concerns about restricting freedom of expression in many countries around the world, as documented in the 2024 Human Rights Report.
"We consider freedom of expression a fundamental component of a functioning democracy. Societies are strengthened by the free expression of opinions and government censorship is intolerable in a free society," the message reads.
The embassy adds that governments, in many cases, continue to use censorship, arbitrary or illegal surveillance, and restrictive laws against voices they dislike, often on political or religious grounds.
The statement also emphasizes that banning or punishing free speech does not bring a solution, but rather worsens the social climate.
