The US Embassy shares Rubio's message: New visa policy for associates of
Marco Rubio

The fentanyl crisis in the United States is alarming, with over 220 overdose deaths every day by 2024, making it the leading cause of death among Americans aged 18-44.

To address this crisis, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a new policy that restricts visas for drug traffickers and their close family members and personal and business associates.

According to the new order, also distributed by the US embassy in Tirana, which is implemented on the basis of Executive Order 14059 and immigration law, persons involved in the illegal drug trade, as well as people associated with them, will be prohibited from entering the US.

This action aims not only to stop their entry, but also to prevent further criminal activity.

The State Department emphasizes that it will use all means to stop and dismantle the flow of fentanyl and other illegal drugs that threaten the lives of American citizens.

Statement by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio:

The fentanyl crisis in the United States is unprecedented, with overdoses remaining the leading cause of death for Americans ages 18 to 44.

More than 40 percent of Americans report knowing someone who has died from an opioid overdose, and in 2024 the United States averaged over 220 overdose deaths each day.

Today, I am announcing a new visa restriction policy under section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which will apply to family members and close personal and business associates of individuals sanctioned under Executive Order 14059, imposing sanctions on foreign persons involved in the global illicit drug trade (EU 14059).

Today's action expands existing tools, including sanctions under EU 14059 and visa inadmissibility under section 212(a)(2)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act for traffickers of controlled substances. Imposing visa restrictions on drug traffickers, their family members, and close personal and business associates will not only prevent them from entering the United States, but will also serve as a deterrent against the continuation of their illegal activities.

The US Department of State will use all means necessary to disrupt and dismantle the flow of fentanyl and other illegal drugs entering the United States and harming American citizens.
