The American ambassador in Tirana, Yuri Kim, said during an interview for the Voice of America that it is the responsibility of the government and political leaders to make sure to understand and respond to the concerns expressed by the ODIHR regarding the elections. the past. This, the ambassador said, also includes creating lists and offering candidates with integrity. Washington's expectations, said Ambassador Kim, are that Albania will do its best to ensure that the elections are held in accordance with international standards and norms.
Voice of America: Ambassador Kim, what is the purpose of this tour in the northern areas of the country, on the eve of the local elections?
Yuri Kim, US Ambassador: I am touring the whole country, going to every corner of Albania, regardless of the elections. As you know, I have tried to go to all 61 municipalities of this beautiful country and it is part of this effort.
Voice of America: A phenomenon, often mentioned about the elections in Albania, is the buying and selling of votes on the one hand and the lack of transparency on the finances of the political parties on the other hand, which obviously make significant expenditures, but then report almost modest figures. You have undoubtedly raised these phenomena with Albanian officials in your meetings. What is the response you get from them? Do they accept this, or are they in denial?
Yuri Kim, US Ambassador: The US position regarding free and fair elections is very consistent and very clear. Our expectation is that a country like Albania, a member of NATO and aspiring for membership in the European Union, will do its best to ensure that the elections are held in accordance with international standards and norms. We know there is room for improvement. We saw in the ODIHR report on the April 2021 elections that shortcomings were noted, which include vote buying. They include the abuse and misuse of state funds, which speaks of the politicization of some elements and activities of the administration. We expect that the Albanian government and those responsible, the responsible actors, including the Central Election Commission and political leaders, will take measures.
Voice of America : Another fact that ODIHR mentions and that is repeated in the latest report of the US State Department is that of "the important advantages that the governing party enjoyed from being in power, including through the control of local administrations and waste of administrative resources". What guarantees can its opponents have that this will not be repeated, especially since in the last 4 years, the socialists have controlled the entire local government?
A jeni e shqetësuar për këtë?
