Pope Leo

Pope Leo X began his four-day visit to France with a stark warning. He called on the world to reconsider the development of Artificial Intelligence, which he said could create a future where a “paradise of machines” takes control of the Earth.

The first American pope, who has made the warning about the dangers of artificial intelligence a central theme of his first papal visit to the country in nearly 20 years, has made the issue a central theme of his 16-month papacy.

“If we want to avoid losing our humanity amidst a ‘machine paradise’ that is invading and conditioning our daily lives, we urgently need education on the ability to make ethical distinctions.”

The Pope also came out strongly against initiatives that allow surrogacy or assisted dying for those suffering from incurable diseases, just months after French politicians approved such measures.

“I am concerned… by those trends in society that risk turning science and technology into profit-driven activities, promoting genetic manipulation, surrogacy, the trade in human organs or the possibility of ending one’s life at will.”

The Pope was welcomed at Paris airport by President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, as well as by children who sang for him and asked for autographs.

During the intensive visit to three cities in France, Leo will try to improve the image of the Church there after abuse scandals that have shaken the country. He is also expected to present a vision for the future of Europe in a speech on Monday.
