Malpensa airport gets the name "Silvio Berlusconi"

Italy's Malpensa Airport has been officially named "Silvio Berlusconi", in honor of the former Italian prime minister and founder of Mediaset.

The inauguration ceremony of the new name took place on Friday morning, at Varese airport, in the presence of Berlusconi's family members, as well as senior Italian political and institutional figures.

His daughter, Marina Berlusconi, was present at the ceremony, and she expressed excitement and pride that the airport, which welcomes thousands of travelers from all over the world every day, will bear her father's name.

Marina described Berlusconi as a man who "always sought dialogue with everyone."

Speaking on behalf of the family, his brother, Paolo Berlusconi, described the airport as a gateway to Europe and the world. According to him, naming it after Silvio Berlusconi is a way to preserve his memory and legacy.

"Today Silvio is no more, but he is more alive than ever," said Paolo Berlusconi, referring to the role the former prime minister had in business, sports, media and politics.

The official ceremony was also attended by the President of the Senate, Ignazio La Russa, the President of Lombardy, Attilio Fontana, and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini.

Salvini described Berlusconi as one of the greatest entrepreneurs in Italian political history and argued that naming the airport does not constitute a partisan act, but rather a recognition of his role.

Meanwhile, the naming of the airport has also been accompanied by political controversy.

The mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, did not attend the ceremony.

Salvini expressed regret for his absence, while Sala stated that he had opposed the decision to name the airport and that his presence at the ceremony would contradict the position he had taken.

There was also a reaction from Marta Fascina, Berlusconi's former partner and Forza Italia MP. Through an Instagram post, she wrote that from now on, every time a traveler departs from the "Silvio Berlusconi" airport and takes to the sky, the former prime minister will be there to accompany them.

Fascina also addressed Berlusconi's critics, stating that they will continue to see his greatness.
