Full statement from the Teachers' Union
The Presidency of the University Union, at the meeting held today, October 20, 2026, at the protest square of Albanian students and pupils, unanimously decided to declare a boycott of teaching in all public universities of the Republic of Albania, in solidarity with students and pupils, as well as in defense of their right to peaceful protest. The boycott begins tomorrow, October 21, 2026, and continues until further notice. Reasons for the boycott:
Students have been protesting for months for quality education, dignified healthcare, safety of life and property, the right to accountability, etc.
The response they received was not dialogue, but silence and, from October 13th onwards, extreme violence.
Teachers cannot continue teaching as usual while their students are being hit on the street.
Teachers share the same opinions with students regarding political and economic developments, rampant corruption, lack of meritocracy, etc. Union demands The University Union demands:
An immediate halt to the use of violence against students and peaceful protesters; An independent and transparent investigation into the use of force since October 13th, and the accountability of those who ordered and carried out this unprecedented violence;
The lawful and dignified treatment of every accompanied student; Meeting the demands of students and pupils.
We call on rectors and heads of higher education institutions to respect this decision and not take any disciplinary measures against participating professors and students.
The boycott is not abandoning the auditorium. It is our way of showing that the auditorium, without rights and dignity, loses its meaning. We will return to the auditorium as soon as our students receive the response they deserve. Finally, we remind our colleagues that this is not just a boycott of auditoriums, but an active participation in the protest. Every day at 10:00 we will gather in front of the Central Building of the Polytechnic University of Tirana and will continue to support the students. Also, lecturers should stay close in communication with students, for teaching materials, or any other assistance they need, as well as inform them that the lessons will be compensated in the future. We must be their main voice and support in these difficult days. All the Governing Authorities of public HEIs will be notified of this decision.
