Just 11 days after marrying the love of his life, Diogo Jota lost his life in a tragic car accident in Spain, along with his brother, André Silva.
The footballer's wife, Rute Cardoso , has recounted in detail the moments of anxiety, the messages that remained unanswered and the moment she received the news that changed her life forever.
In the summer of 2025, Diogo Jota was experiencing one of the most beautiful periods of his life. The Portuguese striker had just won the Premier League with Liverpool and the Nations League with Portugal, and a few days earlier had married Rute Cardoso, his childhood sweetheart.
But happiness turned to tragedy. On July 3, 2025, Jota and his brother, André Silva, lost their lives after the rented Lamborghini they were traveling in in Spain was involved in a highway accident.
Rute Cardoso's story is part of the biographical book "Diogo Jota: Forever in Our Hearts", which brings back memories of the footballer's life and career, through the testimonies of his family, teammates and coaches.
In her story, Rute reveals that renting sports cars was something unusual for her husband.
"Unlike most footballers, who like luxury cars, jewellery and expensive watches, Diogo wasn't into these things. He was happy with the cars we had," she recalls.
However, during the summer holidays, Jota had decided to try out first a Ferrari and then a Lamborghini, which he had to return to Santander, Spain.
Before leaving, Diogo and André went to Rute's sister's house, where the family had the opportunity to spend some more time with them.
Rute remembers that after she saw them off, she sent her husband a simple message: “Have a good trip.” He replied with an emoji, while she asked him to focus on the road. This would be the last message Diogo would send her back.
In the first hours of the journey, everything seemed normal. Diogo and André planned to stop for the night at a hotel in Benavente, Spain, before continuing on to Santander.
At around 10:40 PM, Rute received a video from the photographer of a surprise she and her bridesmaids had prepared for the wedding: a special dance for Diogo.
She shared the video in their chat group and, excitedly, sent it to her husband.
"When you stop, I have a video to show you," she wrote.
Rute tried to get out of the vehicle, but the back doors were locked. In desperation, she punched the window from the inside before trying to walk towards the scene of the accident.
A policeman stopped him and asked him to stay at a distance, so as not to be directly confronted with the grave sight.
Then, she continued to the morgue, where her father was waiting for her. Rute asked to see her husband, but was not allowed to see him up close. She was allowed to see his body through a small window.
Among the personal items handed over were Diogo Jota's watch, wallet and wedding ring.
After that, the bodies were transported to a funeral home and the family returned to Portugal.
Rute traveled in the same van as her husband's body, accompanied by her friend Catarina. Physically and emotionally exhausted, she finally fell asleep along the way.
The story of Diogo Jota is one of the most painful losses the world of football has experienced in recent years. The Portuguese striker was an important figure for Liverpool and the Portugal national team, and his death caused numerous reactions from fans, teammates and football personalities.
The book "Diogo Jota: Forever in Our Hearts" brings not only the story of his career, but also the human side of a footballer who, beyond his sporting success, was a husband and father.
For Rute Cardoso, the final messages, memories of the wedding and the trip that was supposed to be just a homecoming remain part of a night that changed everything.
