Lawyer Navanethem "Navi" Pillay has been announced as the winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.

This is the fifth Nobel Prize awarded this week, following those for literature, chemistry, physics and medicine. In 2025, the Nobel Peace Prize was won by Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado.

Announcing the winner, the chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Jorgen Watne Frydnes, said that the prize is awarded to a person who, with extraordinary courage and integrity, has contributed to the creation of a more inclusive global legal order.

"This year's winner has played a key role in ensuring the prosecution of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide," he added.

The Nobel Foundation announced in September that it would increase the prize money for these prestigious awards to 12 million Swedish kronor for each category.

"This year we celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Nobel Prize and, in this context, we are pleased to be able to increase the prize amount by one million kronor," said Hanna Stjarne, executive director of the Nobel Foundation.

"By increasing the prize amount, we preserve the long-term significance of the Nobel Prize and ensure that its financial value remains stable over time," she added.
