Destruction of the International Space Station, Elon Musk gets the green light and the million dollar contract

NASA has given permission to Elon Musk's company SpaceX to destroy the International Space Station (ISS) by 2030.

The space station has been used continuously by astronauts since 2000 who have conducted more than 3,300 scientific experiments above our heads.

But the countries that operate the ISS have agreed to keep it running until 2030. Since 1998, the US, Russia, Japan, Europe and Canada have maintained various sections of the ISS.

The agreements to jointly run the space station marked a new era of global cooperation after the Cold War.

When those pacts end, the station must be de-orbited, and Elon Musk's company has been awarded the $843 million contract to carry out this task.

SpaceX will build a machine to eject the space station through the atmosphere where it will then be "destroyed", explains NASA.

It will then sink into the ocean, away from populated areas, along with SpaceX's vehicle.

When SpaceX builds the deorbit rocket, NASA will take ownership and direct the mission.
