With the holidays approaching, you may be planning your next trip. You may also be looking for the best ways to cut your travel costs, especially if you're also planning to buy holiday gifts.
Whether you're planning to visit family or take some winter vacations, savvy travelers know that the savings start long before you even get on the plane. You can start saving money as soon as you book your flights.
The Google Flights team has reviewed five years of airfare data to find great deals on the cheapest days to fly, the best time to book your flights during each season, and much more. Here are some of these findings.
What is the cheapest day to schedule a flight?
If you are planning to book a flight, you may be trying to find the cheapest option. According to Google, it's cheaper to fly in the middle of the week than on the weekend. Flights between Monday and Wednesday can be 12% to 20% cheaper than weekend flights. Sundays are an expensive day to book a ride, Google says.
You can also save around 20% of the price by booking a connecting flight instead of a direct flight if you don't mind the extra time it will take you to reach your destination.
Is there a specific day when you have to buy plane tickets?
You may have heard that it's cheaper to book and pay for your plane tickets on a Tuesday than on a Saturday, but that's not necessarily true. "It's not worth much if you wait for your tickets on a certain day of the week," Google said.
Fares have been on average just 1.9% cheaper over the past five years if tickets were bought between Tuesday and Thursday, compared to the weekend, according to the online search giant.
How far in advance of your departure date should you book your flight?
It is better to book your flight well in advance of the day of departure, rather than booking in the last few days. This way you will avoid a possible price increase. Google says that for flights within the US, prices are generally at their lowest between 21 and 60 days before travel. However, it is noted that this does not apply to every destination.
Google did not provide information on how far in advance you should book an international flight.
Best time to book flights during any season
Google has revealed the best period to book a flight for the upcoming holidays and vacations.
Christmas. If you're planning to travel during the holiday season, you can start looking into flights now. For Christmas, you should start looking for flights and ticket prices 88 days in advance. The lowest prices were 22 days before departure, but there is a chance that you won't find any seats if you book that late.
Spring break. Are you already thinking about spring break travel? Fortunately, you don't have to start looking at flights right away. For March-April travel, Google says prices were typically lowest between 23 and 59 days before departure, reaching their lowest price 38 days before departure.
Summer holidays. Summer vacation may be over now, but that doesn't mean you can't start thinking about next year's trip. For flights departing in July or August, prices were lowest between 14 and 44 days before departure, compared to the lowest average prices around 21 days before departure.
Other ways to find good deals when using Google Flights
Compare today's and previous day's flight prices to find out if you're paying more or less, Google advises. To do this, simply search for your destination to see today's price compared to the last 12 months' prices for similar flights. Some research will also show if the price is expected to change in the future.
Turn on the Google Flights price tracking option. To do this, activate "Track prices" by setting the dates of the trip you plan to make. Google will send you an e-mail if the prices will change for the selected dates.
If you don't have a specific week planned to travel, you can select "Any date" to get a notification if the price drops for flights that will be in the next three to six months.
