We've all wondered what it must feel like as we slowly pass from life to death, and it can be a scary prospect for many, as it's largely unknown.

According to  The Sun , an intensive care unit (ICU) doctor who has studied this very moment for more than 25 years has revealed the top five things patients have told him about the line between life and death.

Dr. Sam Parnia, an associate professor in the Department of Medicine at NYU Langone Health said for decades, people have reported experiencing heightened awareness when their hearts have stopped.

"This was the case, even when the doctors said they had not been conscious and were dying," Dr Parnia explained.

He said there were five main themes that emerged from the patients studied.

These were:

1. Sensing that CPR is happening

2. Listening to the medical team

3.Activities in intensive care after CPR

4. Heading towards a destination

5. Evaluation of life.

Of these topics, Dr Parnia said many patients reflected on how their actions had affected others. When it comes to leaving for a destination, some patients said they felt like they were going somewhere that felt like home. Others recalled old memories, some even recalled scary moments from their lives.

"We characterize the evidence that people had and were able to identify that there is a unique remembered experience of death that is different from other experiences that people might have in the hospital or elsewhere. These are not hallucinations, they are not illusions, they are not they are delusions, they are real experiences that appear when you die," said the doctor.

While some patients recalled having specific memories, Dr Parnia said these were likely to be 'misinterpretations' of medical events. When provided with the images that had been shown on the screen, none of the patients were able to recall them and only one recalled the named fruits when they had received CPR.

In March 2018, doctors in a Canadian intensive care unit found that one person had continuous brain activity for up to 10 minutes after their life support was turned off, but three others did not. For more than 10 minutes after doctors declared the person clinically dead, brain waves, like those we experience in sleep, continued to occur.
