The limit of 8 billion inhabitants on planet Earth has been passed. The world's population has increased this November 15 and according to the UN, this unprecedented phenomenon presents great challenges for the poorest countries.

However, after a large increase in the mid-20th century, the rate of population growth is now slowing. According to United Nations reports, it may take about 15 years to reach the nine billion figure. Despite the fact that the number of the population in the whole world cannot be completely accurate, the reports speak of an error in the calculation, by at least 2-3 years.

In previous periods, the UN has chosen to introduce babies who have reached the mark to the world.

But what can their stories tell us about nostalgia, human development and our shared responsibility to care for the planet?

Matej Gaspar, the 5 billionth man

A few minutes after he was born on July 11, 1987, Matej Gaspar faced the strong light of a camera and the faces of several politicians. The momentary chaos had engulfed this small unit of a maternity hospital on the outskirts of Zagreb, and in that chaos, the UN decided to baptize Matej, as the five billionth child in the world.

Thirty-five years later, Gaspar still lives in Zagreb, works as a chemical engineer and avoids any contact with the media. The media circus of his first day in this world seems to have left a bitter taste.

Adnan Mevic was born in Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1999. In a small maternity hospital in Sarajevo, a little boy was visited by the Secretary General of the UN and his name echoed around the world.
