Drinking coffee is linked to longevity

If you only consume one cup of coffee a day, it may be time to increase the amount. According to a new study, which has been published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, drinking many cups of coffee per day is associated with better heart health and a lower mortality rate.

The 12.5-year study investigated the impact of coffee on the health of 449,563 adults aged 40 to 69 with no history of cardiovascular problems.

Study participants were divided into groups – people who drank zero cups of coffee each day, one cup, two to three cups, four to five cups and more than five cups.

The study found that overall, drinking many cups of coffee benefits your health.

First, people who drank two to three cups of instant, ground or decaffeinated coffee experienced a lower risk of mortality compared to people who did not drink coffee. The biggest drop came from ground coffee, which showed a 27% lower risk of death. Decaffeinated coffee reduced the risk by 14% and instant coffee by 11%.

Subsequently, a reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease was found in people who drank two to three cups of coffee each day. Ground coffee again had the highest risk reduction at 20%, followed by instant coffee at 9% and decaffeinated coffee at 6%.
