As the wife of the heir to the throne – Prince William – Kate Middleton is now one of the oldest members of the royal family.

Kate took the title of Princess of Wales when King Charles III ascended the throne of the United Kingdom.

The only woman in the family with a higher position is the king's wife, Camilla Parker Bowles.

These are the 10 common things Kate Middleton can't do as the Princess of Wales.

1 – Kate Middleton cannot vote

Members of the royal family are not allowed to share their political opinions with the public and they must remain neutral in the affairs of the British government. By convention, the Princess of Wales is prohibited from going to the ballot box for any type of election process.

Members of the royal family are also barred from running for political office.

2 – No selfies with the Princess of Wales

The royals often meet members of the public in the course of their duties, and they undoubtedly cross paths with excited selfie-loving fans.

However, a handshake and a hello is all royal fans should expect when meeting Kate Middleton, or any other monarch. Taking a selfie with the princess is strictly prohibited!

3 – No autographs...

Excited fans who would settle for an autograph instead of a selfie with the princess will also be disappointed. Kings should not sign autographs - although they are often asked about them - because of the risk of copies and forgeries.

Under crown rules, Kate can only sign official documents previously authorized by the sovereign.

4 – The princess can't open Instagram

The Princess of Wales is a keen photographer who enjoys taking pictures of her children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. But unlike other 40-year-old mums, Kate isn't allowed to have her own social media accounts to share images and videos of her daily life, or anything else she'd like to post.

5 – The Princess of Wales cannot receive a salary

This is perhaps no surprise, given that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex left the royal family to become financially independent. But senior royals like Kate are not allowed to benefit from their work or earn a salary of any kind.

Instead of making money by licensing the photos she takes, Kate's work is published through official palace channels and she doesn't earn a dime.

6 – The princess cannot eat shrimp

The Princess of Wales is obviously very athletic and fit and benefits from the royal chefs making her healthy meals every day. However, Kate and other members of the royal family are not allowed to eat prawns, mussels or any other form of seafood due to the risk of poisoning.

"It's a very sensible move to give up seafood when we're out and about on public errands. We don't want a member of the royal family to have a serious reaction to food poisoning, especially if she's on an overseas tour," royal caretaker Grant Harold told Woman & Home magazine.

During the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, there were even more food regulations at Buckingham Palace.

Former royal chef Darren McGrady says they could never "serve anything with garlic or too much onion" and that there could never be "potatoes, rice or pasta for dinner".

King Charles also made a change to the palace menu in 2008 when he banned the French foie gras dish due to his concern for animal welfare.

7 – She must strictly follow the 'stop eating' rule

Speaking of food, there's another weird rule Kate has to follow — or anyone who eats with the sovereign, actually. When the king decides he is done with his meal, everyone else at the table must follow and not eat.

8 – The Princess of Wales can't go to bed when she wants to

This rule may have changed since the days of the previous Princess of Wales, Kate's late mother-in-law, Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth. However, we thought we'd mention it because this was a rule we didn't expect.

The Queen's former private secretary, Sir William Heseltine, wrote in his book The Royals in Australia that it was considered very bad etiquette to go to bed before Her Majesty.

"Nobody felt entitled to go to bed before the Queen did," Heseltine wrote. "For Diana, the long royal evenings were agony. Sometimes he would have to sit for hours in the living room where everyone would sit around talking."

9 – There is no 'monopoly' for the princess

Kate is known for her reputation as quite a competitive woman, but not when it comes to the game of Monopoly.

According to The Telegraph, royals are not allowed to play Monopoly due to a rule set by the late Queen. She felt that the game was "getting too devilish", so she banned him from the palace.

10 – The Princess cannot kiss the Prince!

Somewhat!

The real rule is that they are not allowed to practice PDA which stands for Public Displays of Affections.

Fans only saw Kate and William kiss once on the balcony of the Royal Palace on their wedding day in April 2011.

This was the first time and apparently the last!

As a general rule, public displays of affection – not the kisses themselves – are looked down upon in the royal family.

Well, it wasn't that easy to be a Princess!
