This is a list of actors and actresses who were turned down for roles because they were "uglier than they should be" - and some of them, surprisingly, because they were "prettier" than they should be.
Winona Ryder

Recently, Ryber has said that she was not attractive enough to be a movie star in the 80s.
In the past, in particular, she has mentioned that at an audition in the 80s, a casting director stopped her mid-sentence and told her, “You shouldn't be an actress. You're not pretty enough. You should go back to wherever you came from and go to school, you have the star on your forehead!"
Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba was similarly told to "get prettier" and "cry prettier" during her character's death scene in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence was initially turned down for her role in Winter's Bone because she was “too pretty” – she had to prove to the directors that she wasn't just a 'cute, innocent girl'.
Andrew Garfield

Garfiled lost the role of Prince Caspian in the 'Chronicles of Narnia' series because he was "not handsome enough".
Benedict Cumberbatch

The British celebrity who has become a 'sex symbol' for female fans of the opposite sex was initially deemed "not sexy enough" to play legendary detective Sherlock Holmes in the series 'Sherlock' by BBC executives.
Hugh Grant

The writer of "Four Weddings and a Funeral", Richard Curtis, did not want Hugh Grant to play in the film, because he was too handsome.
Grant claimed that Curtis did "everything in his power to prevent me from taking the part". Curtis would later say, “The absolute main thing about that movie when I was writing it was that the person playing the lead role was not going to be beautiful. This was the absolute thesis of the beginning of the film".
Scarlett Johansson

Apparently, Johansson could have been the lead actress in 'Girl with the Drago Tatoo' but during the auditions she was denied the role because she was "too sexy".
Director David Fincher said, “Scarlett Johansson was amazing. It was a great audition, I tell you. But the thing about Scarlett is that you can't wait for her to take her clothes off." Instead, the role went to Rooney Mara.
Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep was deemed "too ugly" to star in King Kong.
Producer Dino De Laurentiis actually said "che brutta" ("how ugly") in front of Meryl when she came to the audition. Instead of sai, the part went to Jessica Lange.
Aidan Turner

According to composer Anne Dudley, Poldark executive producer Damien Timmer was worried that girls and women wouldn't like Aidan Turner enough.
David Tennant

BBC executives reportedly felt the same way about David Tennant as Casanova in Casanova, and wanted Moffat to cast someone sexier.
Kate Beckinsale

Jessica Biel

After being named Esquire's "Sexiest Woman Alive" in 2005, Jessica Biel said she had trouble finding work and that one of the movie directors she auditioned for told her, "I'm not looking for the sexiest woman in the world; I'm looking for a good girl, the girl next door.”
