The possibility of a devastating asteroid crashing into our planet has always been on the table since the extinction of the dinosaurs, Earth's former masters.

However, scientists say that for now we can rest easy as asteroids of problematic sizes do not pose a danger to the planet for at least the next 1,000 years.

According to the studies done so far about orbiting asteroids, it turns out that a space rock like the one that wiped out the dinosaurs is unlikely to come close to our planet for many years to come.

While a 1,097.28-meter-wide asteroid known to astronomers as "1994 PC1" is the biggest threat so far, experts estimate that the space rock has a 0.00151 percent chance of passing within the Moon's orbit.

"This is good news," Oscar Fuentes-Muñoz of the University of Colorado told MIT Technology Review.

As far as we know, there will be no impact for the next 1,000 years.”

To date, NASA lists 1,283,023 known asteroids. They are in different shapes and sizes. The largest has a diameter of 530 km.

For the study in question, scientists at the University of Colorado and the California Institute of Technology analyzed a catalog of near-Earth space objects.
