Chinese cars? European ports overflowing with unsold vehicles

Thousands of imported vehicles are currently stored in several European seaports, many of which are from China.

Some carmakers have leased large areas at ports to import vehicles for which they currently have no buyers. Logistics companies also rent additional parking spaces outside the port.

This situation is currently affecting all European ports where large volumes of vehicles arrive, according to the Belgian ports spokesperson. The Port Authority did not provide concrete figures, but it is currently busy with many more vehicles than in 2020 and 2021.

The problem is not just the clientele. Currently, there is a lack of trucks for transporting cars and there are very few drivers.

Low sales of new electric cars in Europe continue to be the biggest reason for inventory build-up. A plan by some car companies to sell vehicles directly to customers, rather than dealers, is also contributing to overcrowding.
