A member of the San Diego Zoo's African penguin colony has been given orthopedic shoes to help him walk.
The animal suffers from a degenerative disease of the legs.
The 4-year-old penguin, named Lucas, has bumps on his feet due to a chronic inflammatory condition, also known as pododermatitis, which affects many birds and, if left untreated, can lead to death.
For this, the zoo specialists contacted the "Thera-Paw" organization, which produces rehabilitation aids for animals with special needs.

The company produced special "shoes" made of neoprene and rubber to prevent the formation of blisters and sores on Lucas' feet while standing and walking, thus relieving his problems that have lasted for more than three years.
The population of African penguins is decreasing year by year, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature has put them on the list of endangered species.
