When Tilman J. Fertitta contacted the famous German shipyard Lürssen, one of the world's most renowned manufacturers of luxury yachts, he had a clear idea of what he was looking for. The American billionaire, who also currently holds the post of US ambassador to Italy, already had a history with luxury yachts, having purchased at least five vessels over the years, all with the same name: "Boardwalk."
After several smaller yachts and a 77-meter model purchased in 2021 from the Dutch shipyard Feadship, Fertitta took the biggest step last May, with the delivery of the giant 117-meter-long superyacht, technically named Project 13797, built at the Lürssen shipyard in Vegesack/Aumund, near Bremen.
The cost of this "sea monster" is estimated at around $450 million.
A yacht that resembles a giant ship
The Boardwalk is built with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure. With a displacement of more than 5,300 gross tons (GT), it is considered more of a “ship dressed as a yacht” than a traditional luxury vessel.
This superyacht ranks among the 20 largest yachts ever built by Lürssen, surpassing even the yacht "Ahpo", purchased by Canadian-Jamaican billionaire Michael Lee-Chin.
The design was carried out by an international team including Lürssen shipyard, naval architect Frank Woll and other designers specializing in interior and exterior spaces. Fertitta himself actively participated in the process, influencing the organization of the spaces, style and functionality of the yacht.
Modern technology and a "beach club" at sea
Despite its elegant and classic appearance, the Boardwalk hides advanced technology. The Lürssen shipyard describes it as a combination of the owner's personal vision and advanced engineering.
The yacht is conceived as a luxurious floating residence for family and friends, with naturally lit environments and a special lighting system with more than 3,000 external light points, which create a spectacular effect at night.
One of the most unique elements is the retractable part of the aft deck, which automatically opens to reveal stairs leading to the beach club at the bottom of the yacht.
Hundreds of kilometers of cables and luxury in every detail
To maximize interior space, designers expanded the corridors and organized the technical systems so as not to reduce the size of the salons and cabins.
This result required a complex integration of piping, electronic systems, and electrical installations, with hundreds of kilometers of cables hidden behind insulating panels.
The interior is characterized by polished mahogany wood, stainless steel, and modern shapes with complex curves, creating an atmosphere similar to a luxury residence.
11 suites, private cinema and a VIP room with panoramic views
The “Boardwalk” is designed to accommodate a large number of guests. The yacht features:
-11 luxury suites
-a VIP cabin at the front
-onyx-lined bathroom
-a private veranda with panoramic sea views
All cabins have direct access to the side decks through large floor-to-ceiling windows.
One of the most unusual features is a glass-walled corridor that runs through the engine room, allowing guests to get a close-up look at the workings of the ship's technology.
Golf, pool, spa and tools for exploration
On board there is all the equipment expected from a yacht of this class.
The “Boardwalk” includes:
-complete spa
-professional gym
-private cinema
-swimming pool and hot tub
-three customized Hodgdon tenders with a length of 12 meters
-an amphibious vehicle
-4×4 off-road vehicles
-golf putting green
-two helipads, one at the front and one at the back
Unlike some other billionaires, like Jeff Bezos, who also uses a support ship to transport tools and equipment, Fertitta has chosen to have everything included directly on the Boardwalk.
$40 million per year for maintenance
Maintaining this superyacht comes at a tremendous cost. According to estimates, annual expenses reach around $40 million.
This amount includes:
-crew of 42 people
-salaries and staff training
-fuel
-technical maintenance
-insurance
-cleaning and maintaining the yacht
With its size, technology, and luxury, the "Boardwalk" has become a symbol of extreme wealth and one of the largest private yachts in the world.
