High temperatures, men allowed to go to work in shorts: Decision opposed by

As temperatures rise this summer, more and more men in Japan are going to work in shorts, following an initiative by Tokyo authorities to make it easier to cope with the heat.

The Tokyo government is encouraging employees to ditch traditional suits and ties, opting for more comfortable clothing such as T-shirts, sneakers and shorts, reports  the BBC .

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike introduced the "Tokyo Cool Biz" initiative in April, expanding the well-known campaign for energy conservation and adaptation to high temperatures, which has now become a summer tradition in Japan.

However, nearly four months after the recommendation came into effect, the new policy has prompted mixed reactions.

Some employees welcome the change, saying they feel more comfortable in the workplace, while others consider it unfair to women, as they are still expected to wear tights when exposing part of their legs.

Some women have even used the term "sunehara" to describe the discomfort they feel when they see the legs of their male colleagues.

A survey conducted in June by Gorilla Clinic showed that 53.5 percent of respondents were against wearing shorts to work during the summer, while 46.5 percent supported the recommendation.

The director of "Gorilla Clinic" said he has noticed an increase in the number of men seeking laser hair removal on their legs.
