Ireland fines Instagram 400 million euros: It did not protect children's

Irish authorities have fined Instagram 405 million euros for violating children's privacy. The lengthy investigation concerned the children's records, particularly their phone numbers and email addresses.

Meta, the company that owns Instagram, said it planned to appeal the decision. This is the third fine this company has received in Ireland.

"We passed our final decision last Friday and it contains a fine of €405 million," said Ireland's Data Protection Commissioner (DPC).

A Meta official told BBC News: "This investigation focused on legacy settings that we updated over a year ago and have since released many new features to help keep teenagers and their information safe private Anyone under 18 automatically has their account private when they join Instagram, so only people they know can see what they post, and adults can't message teens they don't follow.

The DPC Office regulates large technology companies with European headquarters in the Republic of Ireland. It has never issued such a large fine for a breach of the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation.

But last year, it fined WhatsApp 225 million euros, while Luxembourg's data authority fined Amazon a record 746 million euros.
