A purchase made by an American woman at a thrift store in New Hampshire six years ago cost her just $4, but it has the potential to net her a fortune, up to $250,000!

According to the Boston Globe , the lucky woman, whose name has not been released, visited a store in 2017, looking for old picture frames that she could modify and resell. There she spotted a piece of framed art that impressed her, which she eventually bought for $4.

As it turns out, the work she bought so cheaply, without a second thought, is by NC Wyetg, one of America's best-known illustrators, and will soon be auctioned by Bonhams Skinner with an estimated price of between $150,000 and $250,000.

Last May, while cleaning out her apartment, she found the framed artwork again and decided to satisfy her curiosity by searching the Internet for its creator. After posting a photo of the work on a Facebook page where users share their stories of old objects they've discovered hidden in strange places, her post was lucky enough to be seen by an art conservator who knew her work well. Wyeth.

Lauren Lewis, who once organized an exhibition of the artist's work at the Farnsworth Museum and worked with his son and grandson, was able to recognize the author's unique style. So he asked to see the work up close and decided it was 99% authentic and in remarkably good condition, considering its fate had been unknown for some 80 years.

Experts who have examined the work believe that the frame in which the illustration was found was Wyeth's own choice. The artist chose frames of simple design with special corner protection since they "traveled" by train from his studio to the publishers in Philadelphia or New York.
