Despite Meghan Markle's version of the story, it was the Duchess of Sussex herself who made Kate Middleton cry during their 2018 bridesmaid conflict, not the other way around. At least that's what a new royal family biography claims.
Investigative journalist Tom Bower claims in his book "Revenge" (for the Daily Mail) that Middleton "broke down in tears" after Markle compared her daughter, Princess Charlotte, "unfavorably to best friend Jessica Mulroney's daughter". , Isabel, during a discussion about the appropriate dress before Meghan's wedding to Prince Harry.
Bower claims Markle and Middleton, both now 40, disagreed about Charlotte's outfit. They also allegedly disagreed on whether Markle's bridesmaids "should wear tights" to the wedding. The biography also claims that Mulroney, 42, and Mulroney's mother "supported" Markle's "perseverance" in the Middleton feud.
Bower's version of events isn't the first time Markle has been alleged to 'bother' Middleton.
Media previously reported that Markle made Middleton cry over what Charlotte, now 7, could wear as a flower girl. Tensions were apparently already high between the Cambridges and Sussexes at the time, and Middleton felt the rift was the last straw.
"It was a hot day and apparently there was an argument about whether the bridesmaids should wear tights or not," a friend of Prince William and Middleton told Tatler magazine in 2020 after Harry and Markle stepped down from their royal duties and moved to the United States. "Kate, following protocol, thought she should. Meghan didn't want them to do that."
However, in a rare move, Kensington Palace issued a statement denying the dispute ever took place and saying the Tatler article contained "a host of inaccuracies and false misrepresentations".
A year later, Markle addressed the accusation head-on, claiming during her interview with Oprah Winfrey that it was actually Middleton who made her cry.
"The opposite happened," Markle said, reflecting on her wedding during the March 2020 interview. "Everyone in the establishment knew it wasn't true."
Markle added that she was unsure why no one in the royal family had directly denied reports of a rift between her and her sister-in-law. Markle also confirmed the standoff was over the flower girls' dresses, saying: “It made me cry and it really hurt my feelings. There was no confrontation,” she insisted. "I don't think it's fair for her to go into detail because she apologized and I have forgiven her. It was a really difficult week of the wedding and she was upset about something, but she had it, and she apologized and brought me flowers and a note, apologizing."
In the end she called Middleton "a good man."
