Environmental crimes in Elbasan are repeated with frightening frequency, while citizens suffer serious health consequences. The next scandal centers on the Turkish company Albchrome, more precisely its Ferrochrome plant in Elbasan.

A few months ago, environmental inspectors urgently intervened in two fires near the plant. But when they went there, they discovered 318 tons of toxic industrial dust; this material had been stored for months at the AlbChrome chrome factory, without any contract for its safe treatment or disposal.

The facility, owned by the Turkish group "Yildirim", was temporarily closed, but the toxic waste continues to be there, undisposed of.

This is the latest in a string of disasters to hit one of Europe's most devastated industrial cities, which is often shrouded in deadly smoke from similar fires.

Rama inaugurated the filter

In May 2024, Edi Rama visited the Albchrome Ferrochrome plant in Elbasan, on the occasion of the installation of the new filtration system. The Prime Minister described the 2 million euro investment in the new filter as a major achievement.

"This investment is considerable, for an element that at first glance seems insignificant. The transformation is being done for better conditions for workers. The filtration system is a 2 million euro investment. I told Mr. Ilirim that we will come to celebrate this fact that is welcomed by the community, by state institutions, that it is a battle that we will all win together. This by managing to build bridges of dialogue ," said Rama.

The investment that Rama inaugurated with great fanfare is called dedust. This is a filtration system that sucks in polluted air, separates dust from the air through filters, and only releases the cleaned air. But the dedusting process in a ferrochrome plant leaves voluminous waste that is extremely dangerous to the environment.

When air filters capture the smoke and dust released from electric arc furnaces during chromium smelting, this dust accumulates in the system's hoppers. This residue is technically called Chimney Dust (Ferrochrome Dust).

Since the installation of the filter, all the toxic dust produced by the Ferrochrome Plant has been placed in bags in an open area next to it. Albchrome has no contract for its safe disposal, leaving it untreated in violation of the law.

Kapitali has learned that the Environmental Agency fined Albchrome 200 thousand dollars. But despite the fine, the problem is there as blatant evidence of a serious crime. /Kapitali.al
