Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday that Russia had suffered heavy losses in five months of fighting with Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region of southern Russia, with nearly 15,000 killed.
"During the Kursk operation, the enemy has already lost 38,000 of their soldiers in this direction alone, with approximately 15,000 of these losses being irreversible," Zelensky said in his speech.
Zelensky, in his comments, offered no evidence for the figures he cited for Russian losses. Ukraine launched a massive incursion into the Kursk region in August and has captured parts of the territory, although the Russian military has said it has retaken most of it. Ukraine said it launched a new offensive in the region on Sunday, but gave few details.
Ukrainian and Western estimates say that around 11,000 North Korean troops are fighting alongside Russian forces in the region. Russia has neither confirmed nor denied their presence.
The Russian Defense Ministry said Monday that the Ukrainian advance had been foiled and the main force had been destroyed near the settlement of Berdin, near a road leading northeast to the city of Kursk. The ministry said Russian forces had made significant gains in eastern Ukraine, including capturing the town of Kurakhove.
Zelensky did not mention Kurakhove in his comments. He said Ukrainian forces had created a zone in the Kursk region where Russia had transferred strong military units, preventing Moscow from deploying those forces to key frontline areas in eastern Ukraine.
“Importantly, the invaders cannot now direct all this force in our other directions, especially in the Donetsk region, Sumy, Kharkiv region or Zaporizhzhia,” he said.
