Bulgaria's entry into Schengen brings "happiness" to Greeks: They
The "disappearance" of the border, Greeks flock to gas stations in Bulgaria for cheap diesel and gasoline

As of January 1, 2025, the Greece-Bulgaria border changed drastically, as Bulgaria and Romania officially joined the Schengen area.

The crossing is now done without checks or delays, which has caused emotions especially among drivers and passengers, while social networks have been filled with photos and comments about the new reality.

At the largest border station of Promachon, the customs buildings have remained deserted, while the bars on both sides have been permanently erected.

The kilometer-long queues of cars and trucks, which until recently were a daily occurrence, have now disappeared.

But what has captured attention after the "disappearance" of the border between the two countries is the fact that Greek drivers are rushing to refuel their cars on Bulgarian territory, where prices are much lower.

Specifically, the price of gasoline in Bulgaria is around 1.28 per liter, while in Greece it is around 1.80 euros, and the price of diesel is equally attractive.

The average price of gasoline in Bulgaria for the period from January 2015 to December 2024 was 1.14 euros per liter, with the lowest price recorded in May 2020 at 0.82 cents and the highest recorded in July 2022 at 1.73 euros per liter.

Compared to the global average price for the same period, Bulgaria still offers fuel at significantly lower prices.

In detail, for a vehicle with a 50-liter tank, the cost of a full tank is 64 euros in Bulgaria and 90 euros in Greece, i.e. 26 euros less.
