Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has asked President Biden to participate in the Peace Summit to be held in Switzerland in mid-June.
Zelensky said that "the possible absence of his main ally would be applauded by Putin".
Meanwhile, according to reports from the American media, it is thought that President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will miss the summit, an absence which would be a big blow for Ukraine. Washington says it supports the meeting, but has not yet committed to sending a high-level delegation, the BBC reports .
The Swiss government has invited more than 160 countries and says the purpose of the summit is "to provide a forum where world leaders discuss paths to a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, based on international law and the UN Charter."
On the other hand, there are obvious obstacles on the way to the success of the summit, among them the very fact that the country that started the war, that is, Russia, will not be present.
Russia is angry with Switzerland for imposing sanctions as direct flights to Russia were also suspended. Late last year, these steps prompted Gennady Gatilov, Russia's ambassador to the United Nations, to issue a media statement to reporters in Geneva arguing that Switzerland had abandoned its neutrality and was therefore no longer a suitable place for peace talks.
The Swiss government said around 70 countries have so far agreed to participate, but President Zelensky says the figure is now around 90, including French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, as well as African and Middle Eastern states. .
So what is the likely outcome? In an attempt to play down expectations, Swiss President Viola Amherd said there was no guarantee the summit would be a success and that it would not immediately result in a peace deal.
The full agenda has not yet been released, but President Zelensky has said the exchange of political prisoners, the security of nuclear power plants and the return of abducted children should be discussed. It is not clear whether the full withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory, Kiev's main demand for any peace deal, will be addressed.
