DASH Spokesman: What Happened in Texas Affects US Position in the World

State Department spokesman Ned Price acknowledged Wednesday that the attack on the school in Texas affects the United States's position in the world.

"The fact is that what is happening in this country is magnified on the world stage," Price told a State Department conference.

"When the US is at its best, it sets an example that other nations would seek to follow, and cases like these are examples that no country would want to emulate," he said.

"We have the potential to be a source of confusion, a source of mistrust, for our closest friends and allies, worse yet an object of regret," he added.

"The power of our example has the potential to be our greatest asset. "However, in a day like today, it is that example, an example that the world is seeing clearly, that there will be implications for our position and we are very aware of that."

Other governments send formal notes of condolence after such events, he noted, adding that his colleagues sent abroad often hear distrust of how something like this could continue to happen.

"Following this, even for those of us who are involved in foreign policy every day, has been a real blow," Price said.

An 18-year-old opened fire on an elementary school in Texas on Tuesday, killing 19 children and two teachers. As a result of the shooting, 16 other students were injured.
