Reuters / An unknown phone call between Benjamin Netanyahu and Donald Trump appears to have determined the fate of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a bombing in Tehran on the morning of February 28. Reuters has shed light on the background of the talks between the US president and the Israeli prime minister less than 48 hours before the attack began.

Trump and Netanyahu knew from intelligence in the previous days that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his top aides would meet at his compound in Tehran.

This led them to discuss a “decapitation attack” on a country’s supreme leader, a tactic often used by Israel but much less frequently by the United States.

Meanwhile, new intelligence information was revealed that the meeting had been moved from Saturday night to Saturday morning.

Netanyahu had argued that there could never be a better opportunity to assassinate Khamenei and avenge previous Iranian attempts to assassinate Trump, people familiar with the call said. One of those attempts by Iran was in the summer of 2024, during a campaign speech.

At the time of the call, Trump had already approved a U.S. military operation against Iran, but had not yet decided when or under what conditions the United States would enter the war. The United States had also greatly increased its presence in the Middle East and beyond, so an attack (even a unilateral one) seemed almost a foregone conclusion.

Reuters wrote that it was unable to determine how Netanyahu's argument affected Trump. However, it appears that the call was the Israeli prime minister's final appeal to the US president.

However, sources believe that call was the catalyst for Trump's final decision to order the military to proceed with "Operation Epic Fury" on February 27.

Last week, Netanyahu dismissed as fake news the claim that “Israel dragged the US into war with Iran.” He went on to ask a rhetorical question: “Does anyone believe he can tell Trump what to do?”

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth also confirmed this in his own way, stating in early March that "Iran tried to assassinate President Trump and it was he who had the final say."

Reuters notes that Trump has been considering an attack since the spring of 2025. After the first strike last June, Trump had talked about eliminating the missile capability, but a little later, thoughts of a second strike began to arise. This time, however, the Israelis wanted to kill Khamenei and began planning it themselves.

During a December visit to Mar-a-Lago, Netanyahu told Trump that he was not entirely satisfied with the outcome of the joint operation in June. Trump indicated that he was open to a new round of bombing, but also wanted to try another round of diplomatic talks.

Ultimately, two events prompted Trump to strike Iran again, according to several American and Israeli officials and diplomats.

The January 3 U.S. operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in Caracas ended without American casualties and ousted a longtime U.S. foe, and that same month, massive anti-government protests erupted in Iran. This prompted a violent response from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, resulting in the deaths of thousands.
