A van driver has provided potentially crucial information regarding the murder of Crimewatch presenter Jill Dando, claiming he saw a man resembling a known hitman near the scene.
The key witness was driving near the spot where 37-year-old Dando was shot dead outside her home on April 26, 1999. He told police two days later that he had seen a man in a dark suit running down Fulham Palace Road in South West London, in his Ford Transit.
After seeing images of Serbian hitman Milorad Ulemek, the witness said: "He really looks like the man I saw."
This development comes after a female witness told the Mirror newspaper last year that she was certain she had seen Ulemek running on the same road around the time of the incident.
Ulemek, 57, led a group of assassins for the oppressive regime of Slobodan Milosevic, who died in 2006 while on trial for war crimes. The lead prosecutor in Milosevic's case has suggested that Ulemek should be investigated as part of the Dando murder inquiry, especially after the findings by the Mirror newspaper, the Manchester Evening News reports.
"I would encourage the police to be open-minded given that there is new evidence that may not have been considered and it would be helpful if it were taken into account," said Sir Geoffrey Nice KC.
At the time of Dando's murder, the Yugoslav conflict was ongoing, with British forces bombing Serbia. Shortly after her death, the BBC received a call claiming that her murder was in retaliation for NATO bombing.
Now, the former van driver claims he is "80% certain" it was Ulemek who he nearly hit with his vehicle shortly after the journalist was shot dead outside her home, as reported by the Mirror.
He shared with the Mirror his belief that police should investigate Ulemek, a twice-convicted murderer currently serving a 40-year prison sentence in Serbia. The witness, a man in his 60s who wishes to remain anonymous, expressed his willingness to speak to detectives, stating: "She was taken from her family in a disgusting way. How could someone do something like that to a woman like her?"
At the time, the witness gave a statement saying: "I had to brake hard to stop or I would have hit him. He ran out and I managed to stop about two or three meters away from him. I noticed the man was looking back at him from where he had just run away. I shouted 'you idiot', the man was still running across the road, he didn't see me when I shouted at him, he just kept running. I still wasn't moving and I saw him running into a park."
Upon learning of Jill's murder at her residence on Gowan Avenue, which is located approximately 600 meters from the incident, the witness immediately contacted authorities.
"I immediately remembered the man running in front of me," he said. "I saw this man clearly and distinctly, as he was about two or three meters away from me and was in my sight for about five seconds, I would probably recognize him again," he added.
The former van driver shared a recent confession, saying: "Anyone else would have said 'f*** off' or 'sorry' but he didn't say anything, he just wanted to leave and that's what made me suspicious. It looks like he was running away from something. If I had known, I would have caught him."
He described the suspect to police as wearing a "dark suit jacket" with pants, 5' 11", and in his late 20s to early 30s, with a medium build and short black hair that was worn longer on top. These details closely match Ulemek, who was 31, similar in build, height and hairstyle, and match a description given by a female driver.
The same driver told the Daily Mirror last year that she believed Ulemek was the well-dressed gentleman seen hurrying away from the scene. In her statement to police the day after the murder, she recalled seeing a man dressed in a dark suit who appeared visibly shaken.
Furthermore, a month after the incident, she identified him as the "X-Man" seen in security camera footage at a nearby subway station, as revealed by police records.
Facial comparison expert Emi Polito, in an analysis prepared for the Daily Mirror, noted that the person in the video, identified as N6814 in police documents, possesses comparable features to Ulemek, such as a mouth, beard and hairline. Polito could not discern any discernible differences between the two individuals.
