A touching farewell!

An 81-year-old nun, a close friend of Pope Francis for more than four decades, thrilled the public with her presence in St. Peter's Basilica when she was allowed to bypass protocol and approach the Pope's coffin.

French nun Genevieve Jeanningros arrived at the ceremony site to pray, accompanied by a Vatican official.

According to the Daily Mail, her friendship with Pope Francis began when he was still the archbishop of Buenos Aires, under the name Jorge Mario Bergoglio. Their shared commitment to the marginalized brought them together. The nun dedicated more than 56 years to supporting marginalized women, mainly transgender, in Ostia, Rome.

In the video that emerged, the nun appears to be approaching the restricted area in front of the coffin, accompanied by a Vatican official. Despite bypassing strict protocol – as only cardinals, bishops and priests are allowed to approach this special area – no one intervened.

Instead, she was allowed to say goodbye calmly.

Wearing a blue headscarf, the nun, whom the Pope called "L'enfant terrible" (the terrible child), stood silently by the coffin and burst into tears, remaining motionless for a moment.

Pope Francis had recognized her humanitarian work

In July, the Pope had personally visited the nun in Ostia, to publicly honor her humanitarian work. The meeting took place at an exhibition center, where the Pope expressed his respect for the woman who dedicated her life to protecting the weak.

Genevieve Jeanningros lives in a caravan with another nun, Anna Amelia Giaketto. Every Wednesday, she accompanied homeless, poor and transgender women to the Vatican, where Francis welcomed them, offered them food and financial support. The nun's presence at Pope Francis's casket drew positive comments.
