Socialist MP Fatmir Xhafaj addressed some of the problems facing the justice system today in a critical tone. MP Xhafaj said that the creation of SPAK and GJKKO put an end to the culture of impunity, emphasizing that no one is above the law anymore.
"No one is above the law and the importance of the independence of institutions is absolute regardless of political power, on the other hand they are also evidence of integrity and professionalism, in criminal investigation and trial. The prosecution has evolved towards a modern model of prosecutorial independence. The creation of SPAK and GJKKO has been a decisive step in changing the culture of impunity and equality before the law", said Xhafaj.
Xhafaj said that the professional status of prosecutors should be strengthened.
"This report makes clear the way we see and want these institutions. I have special respect for the work of our prosecutors who face difficult infrastructure and pressure conditions. They are on the front lines of dealing with crime and pressure, and therefore, in the first moments of drafting the reform, I strongly supported strengthening their professional status, guarantees for independence, career and the protection of institutional integrity", emphasized Xhafaj.
There is also criticism of the investigative secrets that are leaking to the media, saying that this is now unacceptable.
"Using the media to reveal investigative secrets is unacceptable. The judge and prosecutor should serve the public institution through the law and not their personal careers. We are a little late, we need intervention through legal mechanisms or with new legal proposals," Xhafaj continued.
