"Albania surpasses the EU in relation to detention measures"/ Xhafaj:

Socialist Party MP Fatmir Xhafaj reacted to the statement of the Attorney General.

Xhafa said that Albania surpasses EU and regional countries in terms of the number of prison arrests.

" We have a critical situation according to international reports and studies. It turns out that Albania has the highest number of prison sentences compared to EU and regional countries. Belgium, on the other hand, has 10 people per 100,000 inhabitants."

We have 94.6 people per 100,000 inhabitants under arrest. Albania has one of the highest pre-trial detention rates in Europe, over 50%. The length of pre-trial detention in Albania is much higher than the average for countries in the region and the EU.

"The average in Albania is 253 days (8.4 months) in general detention. The situation we have exceeds international standards and shows the urgent need for regular monitoring and assessment of the need and proportionality of the measures ," said Xhafaj .
