The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, declared today that Ambassador William Walker, before being a friend of Kosovo, is a friend of the truth.
He said that the OSCE verification mission helped change the international perception of the KLA.
According to him, the American diplomat with his statements echoed the massacre of Recak, assessing it as a crime against humanity.
"In January 1999, the Serbian police surrounded the village of Recak. They killed and massacred the bodies of 45 residents... Nothing has changed the course of events more than the echo of the massacre in Recak as reported by Ambassador William Walker. Before he is a friend of Kosovo, he is a friend of the truth", he said at the ceremony of the "Haxhi Zeka" University for the awarding of the honorary doctor degree "Doctor Honoris Causa" to Ambassador William Walker.
The title was presented to him during a solemn ceremony organized by the University of Peja "Haxhi Zeka" with this motivation: "For humanity and special human and professional courage in the preservation and advancement of universal human rights towards the unification of the democratic world for the vital value of humanity".
Regarding the award, the former head of the OSCE verification mission in Kosovo, in the years 1998-1999, said that it is one of the most important awards he had received in his lifetime.
During an interview for Kosova Press, the American diplomat tells how he escaped an assassination attempt by a Serbian policeman, saying that if he had died, the world would never have heard about the massacre of Recak and that the events in Kosovo would have another flow.
"One day before the massacre of Recak, we had an incident here, on the street, where some Serbian policemen, I believe policemen from Belgrade, had a small incident, and my security bodyguards, all young Kosovar men, young men, they thought they saw one of these Serbian policemen coming at me with a hand grenade, I didn't see a hand grenade, but they put me in an armored car, took me to the office, I insisted on going back to the street where my apartment was and I spoke to some police, Serbian police, and they didn't come up with very good answers about what had happened, I asked to meet their commander, and finally I met the commander, and according to Milosevic, my safety was the responsibility of the Serbian government , and I said, well, one of your cops is supposed to have come at me with a hand grenade, and I don't know if that's true, but when I tried to investigate and find out what had happened, I got funny answers", he recalled during the ceremony.
