Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has reacted after the execution of the former senior official with British-Iranian citizenship Alireza Akbari in Iran, calling it a "heartless and cowardly act, carried out by a barbaric regime".

Sunak, in a tweet after Iranian state media announced that Tehran had executed Akbar on charges of spying for Britain, said: “I am appalled by the execution of British-Iranian national Alireza Akbari in Iran.

"This was a callous and cowardly act, carried out by a barbaric regime with no respect for the human rights of its own people. My thoughts are with Alireza's friends and family," Sunak wrote.

Iran's former deputy defense minister was arrested in 2019 and charged with spying for Britain in connection with past nuclear talks between Iran and Western countries, according to Iranian state media.

In an audio recording broadcast by BBC Persian on Wednesday, Akbari said he confessed to crimes he did not commit after extensive torture.

"With more than 3,500 hours of torture, psychedelic drugs and methods of physiological and psychological pressure, they took away my will. They drove me to the brink of insanity and forced me to make false confessions," he said.

Iranian state media also aired a video on Thursday saying Akbari played a role in the 2020 assassination of Iran's top nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, killed in a 2020 attack outside Tehran that authorities blamed on time Israel.
