Paris authorities have launched an investigation into the death of a three-year-old girl who was found in the washing machine of her family's apartment, prosecutors said.

An investigation into the cause of death was launched on Friday after the child was discovered northeast of Paris on Thursday night, the capital's prosecutor's office said. A special juvenile protection unit is leading the investigation.

The prosecutor's office has not released any other details, or confirmed a report in the daily newspaper Le Parisien that she was found alive in the washing machine by her father and another family member and died in emergency care an hour later.

The girl had just turned three less than a week ago, according to the publication. The discovery was made around 22:30 in the apartment located in Paris (XX). The child was already in critical condition when he was rescued, reports Le Parisien.

She was pronounced dead shortly after 11:30 p.m. An autopsy has not yet been performed. According to the statements of the father, 48 years old, the door of the washing machine was closed when the family members found it.

After returning from work, the father had dinner with his 37-year-old wife and one of their children. At the end of the meal, the parents became concerned about their daughter's absence, reports Le Parisien.

Then the whole family went to look for him, inside and outside the house, and neighbors were asked for help. After finding the girl, the father immediately called the emergency services for medical help.
