The cost of applying for a British passport will increase from next month.

The government has stated that it will announce the new fees for applying for passports from February 2, which will affect those who will renew or apply for the means of identification.

The fee for a standard online application made from within the UK will rise to £82.50 for adults from £75.50 currently. For children's passports the payment of £49 will go to £53.50.

Postal applications will rise from £85 to £93 for adults and from £58.50 to £64 for children.

The official government website announcing the proposals says: “The new fees will help the administration to move to a system that matches the costs through those who use it, reducing reliance on funding from general taxation. The government has no benefit from the passport application costs."

“The fee will contribute to the cost of passport application processing, consular service across the border, including for lost or stolen passports and registering British citizens at the country's borders. The increase can enable the government to continue improving its services".

This is the first time in 5 years that passport application fees have been increased, the statement said, adding that the proposals will be subject to parliamentary approval.
