The Foreign Ministry of Kosovo clarified the public regarding the application for membership in the Council of Europe, confirming that this process has not failed and that no vote against has occurred. It is also emphasized that Kosovo has provided extensive support to overcome the first phase.
"The membership of the Republic of Kosovo in the Council of Europe has not been voted against and has not failed. On the contrary, since May 12, 2022, significant progress has been made throughout the membership process", declared the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of Kosovo.
This ministry further explains that last September, the Secretariat of the Council of Europe gave a legal interpretation of Kosovo's application, confirming that there is no legal obstacle to full membership. Also, the official Prishtina draws attention to the fact that this application was made in coordination with all international partners and that it has provided broad support to pass the first stage of the 3-stage process.
"It is important to clarify that there are three stages of voting for a country's membership in the Council of Europe. In the first phase, the Committee of Ministers starts the membership procedure. In the second phase, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe sets relevant standards and gives the recommendation for membership. In the third stage, the Committee of Ministers decides after the opinion of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe", explained the Ministry.
In the statement, the Foreign Ministry of Kosovo emphasizes the importance of breaking the status quo for the country's membership in international organizations and instruments, which bring great benefits to Kosovo.
