The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, has resigned from the leadership of the ruling party, the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).
During the party meeting, held in Kragujevac on May 27, Vučić proposed the Minister of Defense of Serbia, Miloš Vučević, to the position of the chairman of this party. During the meeting, Vucevic was elected by his fellow party members to lead the SNS. Vucevic is also a high official of this party.
"Miloshi is an official dedicated to the SNS and to the idea of an independent and prosperous Serbia", said Vucic during the speech.
Vucic had earlier announced that he would leave the leadership of the party. He also announced that starting from May 28, he will start forming a new movement. However, he added that he will continue to stay in the SNS party.
As he explained, the movement he wants to create will be broader than the SNS, because his goal is for people who are not part of the party to participate in this movement. He did not specify who will be invited to be part of this movement.
During the speech at the party meeting, Vucic also spoke about the situation in Kosovo, which he called difficult.
A day ago, the Kosovo Police assisted the new Albanian mayors of Zveçan, Zubin Potok and Leposaviç, to enter their offices in the north of Kosovo.
This decision was opposed by groups of local Serbs, who clashed with police officials.
Likewise, Western countries condemned Kosovo's actions and said that the entry of new mayors into municipal buildings was "forced entry".
After increasing tensions in the north, on May 27, Serbia raised the combat readiness of its armed forces to the highest level.
In May 2012, Vucic was elected head of the SNS, the year this party came to power. The opposition and a part of the public have criticized him for holding the two positions simultaneously, that of the president of the state and the head of the SNS, arguing that such a thing is against the Serbian Constitution.
However, this case has never been sent for evaluation to the Constitutional Court of Serbia./REL
