22 killed in Israeli attacks on Rafah, mostly children

Israeli attacks overnight in the southern Gaza city of Rafah killed 22 people, including 18 children, Palestinian health officials said on Sunday. The developments occurred as the United States was moving toward approving billions of dollars of additional military aid to Israel, its close ally.

Israel has carried out air strikes almost daily in Rafah, where more than half of Gaza's 2.3 million population has been displaced to escape fighting elsewhere.

Israeli authorities have vowed to expand the ground offensive on the city bordering Egypt, despite international calls for restraint, even from Washington.

On Saturday the House of Representatives approved a $26 billion aid package to Israel that included about $9 billion in humanitarian aid to Gaza.

The Israeli-Hamas war killed more than 34,000 Palestinians, according to local health officials, and destroyed gaza's two largest cities and parts of the region.

About 80% of the population has moved to other parts of the territory, which experts say is on the verge of famine.

Israel launched the offensive in response to hamas' terror attack on the Jewish state on October 7, 2023, during which about 1,200 people were killed, according to Israeli figures. The militants took about 250 others hostage. Israel says about 130 people continue to be held hostage, but a quarter of them are dead. Hamas has been called a terrorist organization by the United States, The United Kingdom, the European Union and other countries.

The conflict, already entering its seventh month, has fueled regional tensions by positioning Israel and the U.S. against Iran and allied militant groups across the Middle East. After an unprecedented Iranian airstrike on Israel, the latter retaliating, further raising fears of a wider conflict.

Tensions have also risen in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Israeli troops killed two Palestinians who the military said attacked a checkpoint with knife and gunfire near the southern West Bank city of Hebron early Sunday morning.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said the two killed, aged 18 and 19, were members of the same family. The army said there were no casualties among The Israeli forces.

Thousands of Israelis have taken to the streets to demand new elections to replace Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a deal with Hamas to free the hostages. Netanyahu has vowed to continue the war until the complete destruction of Hamas and the return of all hostages.
