Stratwarming

The year 2022 has recorded one of the mildest winters in the country's history. Snowfall has been scarce, and so have high temperatures, breaking several times the record for the highest temperatures ever recorded.

According to " Il Meteo ", we will now face a sudden warming over the North Pole, which could actually give a good shock to the whole winter season, so far subdued and characterized by temperatures well above the average.

But what is Stratwarming? This term, in meteorology, refers to an abnormal and intense heating of the earth's stratosphere just above the Arctic Circle. As the map below shows, the area between Siberia and Alaska will be under observation in the coming weeks, where the thermal anomaly may be even more significant: even, as the map shows, deviations from the average up to +30°C are expected.

Once activated, this heating gradually tends to expand into the upper troposphere, with consequences for the Polar Vortex. From a climatological point of view, it has already happened several times since mid-January. Powerful frost waves managed to invade Europe and Italy, as in 1929, 1956, 1991, 2012 and 2018.

During the second half of January (or within the first few days of February) the Polar Vortex can "break away" and move from its natural location, with an exponential increase in the chances of the arrival of frozen air masses, which will first touch the heart of Europe, then the Mediterranean basin.
